This was the most enjoyable movie I have seen in quite a while. It wasn't particularly sophisticated, and although I haven't read the original, I am sure it wasn't very true to the story.<br/><br/>Anyway, there were tons of laughs and good natured humor. The children in the audience seemed to particular enjoy this movie. And for once that doesn't mean potty humor.<br/><br/>For Jackie Chan fans, there are a number of fight scenes. Notmanyyou would find in his normal movies, but this isn't an action comedy, it is a comedy with some action.<br/><br/>This movie really seems aimed for children, but even adults should enjoy it.
There are some movies that bomb, which actually turn out a lot better than the criticism makes you think, but there are others that deserve every bit of negative criticism they received. This is one of those films. It has some amusing moments, like when Jackie Chan tries to cling onto the hot air balloonit's flying away, but those moments are few and far between. Chan has mentioned time and time again in interviews that he wishes he could be cast in roles different from the usual action and martial arts heroes he usually plays. Unfortunately, Chan has still not mastered the English vocabulary. He seems to struggle with every line of dialogue he utters in this movie. The role requires him to be an action hero, but it also requires more "acting" than he's used to. Chan, stick with your day job. I'm not too familiar with Steve Coogan, but I've seen him in interviews on "Conan O'Brien," and he seems like a really funny guy. Unfortunately, none of his comic abilities are put to good use in this lame brained flick. Honestly, I was amused by some of the cameos. The Arnold Schwarzenegger cameo was undoubtedly fun to watch. Other celebrities make appearances, like Luke and Owen Wilson, Kathy Bates and Rob Schneider. Normally, I don't like giving away cameo appearances, but I doubt anyone reading this is rushing to see this flick anyway. "Around the World in 80 Days" adds to the huge stack of crap that Disney has produced over the years, in the live-action category.

A more faithful adaptation was made in 1956.<br/><br/>To name a few specific and obvious changes from the novel:<br/><br/>-In the film, Phileas Fog is an eccentric inventer who takes a bet for a position of auhority. In the book he was a recluse who spent most of his time playing cards and the bet was simply a sum of money.<br/><br/>-Passpartout in the book was much more open with Fog. He was being honest when he said he was French, and there was no sub-plot about him taking advantage of Fog to achieve a hidden agenda. Also in the film he is responsible for the bank robbery, despite having nothing to do with it in the book.<br/><br/>-While the bank robbery did happen in the book, it is given a larger role and servesmotivation for the characters. Lord Kelvin also pins it on Fogan excuse to keep him from winning the bet. In the book, the robbery happened of-screen and had nothing to do the main characters. Inspector Fix only mistook Fog for the robber because his appearance matched the description he had been given of the actual criminal.<br/><br/>-In the film, Inspector Fix is depicteda dim-witted officer who is manipulated by Kelvin. In the book, he was much more reasonable, having mistaken Fog for the robber based on his appearance matching the description. He also eventually helps Fog and releases him when he realizes his mistake.<br/><br/>-The love interest in the book was an Indian princess, not a French artist.
